Have you ever made wood stain out of steel wool and vinegar? I’ve been wanting to try this for a while after seeing it pop up all over the place and finally found a good excuse to give it a go.
And it’s simple. All I did was stick a couple of balls of steel wool in a mason jar, add enough vinegar to almost cover them and then let it sit for five days. The vinegar rusts the steel wool and makes a beautiful rusty brown stain.
The longer it sits, the darker it gets so you can play around with how long it sits to vary the intensity of your stain. Because it’s just steel wool and vinegar, it’s a great option for those who want a natural alternative to oil based stain. It’s perfect for when you’re pregnant or for using on a project you want to do with the kids.
I used it on the wood for our map poster and love the warmth it brought. I finished it off with Minwax’s dark paste finishing wax which deepened the tone and left it with a soft sheen. I really love how they complimented each other and will definitely be using them together again.
Any creative ideas you’ve seen that you’re eager to try?
