I love that our kids are able to share a room at this stage of their lives. It won’t be forever, Emma is five and Brendan is three and they will have their own rooms when we finish the basement when they are a little older and are ready for that. But right now, they really do love having the company for going to sleep. And I love the togetherness that it teaches them.
One of the best helps in getting everybody to fall asleep happily has been the addition of these reading lights by each of their beds. The bunk beds give them a bit of space to settle down for the night and if one of them falls asleep before the other, the night owl (which is usually the younger of the two!) can still look at books in bed without disturbing the other one. It’s helps to settle grumpiness about who wants to sleep and who wants to have the light on to read when they both have a little flexibility.
I love the shape and sturdiness of these little industrial wall lights from Ikea. The simple light switch is easy enough for even our three year old to turn on and we put small LED bulbs in them so they don’t get too hot for little hands. We just check to make sure the lights are off before we turn in for the night.
Sometimes all it takes is a simple change to make everyone a little happier.
